A young man, identified simply as Mandali, has tragically died after reportedly consuming a dangerous substance known locally as “Colos,” a potent mix of cannabis strains, opioids, and raw gin. The incident occurred shortly after his return from the 2024 Christmas carnival in Edo State.
The annual event, organised by local youths, took place on 26 December 2024 on Ofumwengbe Street, off First East Circular Road in the Oredo Local Government Area. According to witnesses, Mandali consumed the psychoactive substance at his residence near a well-known brothel in the area.
The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of the morning when Mandali reportedly impaled himself on a sharp object, leading to severe injuries to his head. Witnesses revealed that he bled profusely for hours before being discovered by a friend who was visiting.
A local source stated, “He was found sitting in a chair, surrounded by a pool of his own blood. His friend, upon seeing the scene, raised the alarm, prompting neighbours and family members to come together to address the situation.”
Despite their efforts, Mandali’s injuries proved fatal. His body was taken for burial the following day.
Neighbours and acquaintances described Mandali as a polite individual who lived alone after losing his father. His mother reportedly resides elsewhere, leaving him to share his home with other smokers. One artisan familiar with the deceased commented, “Mandali might have survived if someone had been there to take him to the hospital when he lost consciousness. It’s such a sad ending.”
