The Edo State Police Command has issued a ban on the sale and use of fireworks during the yuletide season, warning that anyone caught with bangers or similar explosive devices will be arrested and prosecuted.
In a statement on Saturday, the Command said it had observed a worrying rise in the use of knockouts across the state, stressing that the loud explosions often trigger panic, spark false security alerts and could lead to avoidable emergencies.
According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, fireworks remain prohibited under existing laws, and violators will face the “full wrath of the law”.
“The loud and sudden explosions from these items are capable of creating unnecessary panic, causing fear in the minds of the public, and potentially leading to false security alerts or avoidable emergencies,” the Command warned.
Parents and guardians were urged to caution their children against using knockouts, while shop owners were advised not to stock or sell the banned items. The Command described the situation as both a public nuisance and a potential threat to safety during the festive period.
Reassuring residents of its preparedness for the Christmas season, the police said it remained committed to maintaining order and preventing any activity that could compromise public safety. Members of the public were encouraged to report individuals involved in the sale or use of fireworks in their neighbourhoods.
