A close associate of former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that the Bayelsa-born statesman is preparing to return to the political battlefield as a leading contender in the 2027 presidential election.
According to a report by Vanguard, the unnamed ally, who is a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), confirmed that the effort to draft Jonathan back into the race is well underway and that the former president has given his consent to the move.
The source disclosed that Jonathan’s decision is driven by a renewed determination to address Nigeria’s deepening poverty, growing hardship, and the general economic decline being experienced across the country.
“Dr Jonathan has listened to the cries of many Nigerians who believe he can restore stability and economic progress. He is stepping forward to reposition the country and offer a new direction,” the ally said.
Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, is constitutionally eligible to serve only one more term if elected, having previously completed one full term in office.
The source revealed that the former president has been holding private consultations with key figures within and outside the PDP. Among those he reportedly met with is former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), whom he visited last weekend at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State.
Though details of the meeting remain undisclosed, Jonathan’s associate expressed confidence that the northern bloc had been adequately briefed and that the idea of a one-term presidency has been positively received.
The source further noted that the move to bring back Jonathan is being championed by a coalition of influential leaders and elder statesmen who see him as a unifying figure capable of restoring national stability and economic growth.
“Jonathan is currently in the South-South region, meeting with political stakeholders, traditional rulers, and party leaders to garner their support and formally present his vision for 2027,” the source added.
Political analysts say a potential Jonathan comeback bid could reshape the PDP’s internal dynamics and recalibrate the party’s strategy against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu, who is also widely expected to seek a second term.
If Jonathan does declare his candidacy, it would mark a dramatic return to frontline politics for the former university lecturer-turned-president, who left office a decade earlier with his now-famous quote: “My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.”
