Amidst claims and counterclaims by Members and leaders of the APC in Edo state that Senator Adams Oshiomhole will impose his preferred aspirant on the party, Victor Ofure Osehobo, the Assistant State Publicity Secretary says nothing of such will happen as a level playing field is available for the party primaries on February 17.

Q: There is so much in the media about Senator Adams Oshiomhole imposing his preferred aapiran on the party ahead of your primary on Saturday. What is your party’s position on this trend which some say could have devastating consequences for the party?

A: Thank you very much for seeking this clarification. I have heard of the insinuations myself. What I know for a fact is that my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state recognizes the importance of the freedom of expression. There are various assertions surrounding the distinguished Senator Adams Oshiomhole. It is crucial to acknowledge that while these claims may circulate, the party staunchly upholds its democratic principles and maintains the integrity of its internal processes.

In the realm of politics, as you are aware especially within a party as prominent as the APC, discussions and debates about key figures are not uncommon. Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who is a single individual, who is not supernatural – with his significant political stature, has undoubtedly been a subject of diverse opinions and assessments within and without the party. However, it is imperative to emphasize that amidst these discussions, the APC in Edo state assures its members and the public that its commitment to democratic values remains unwavering.

Q: Don’t you see the fears of your party members coming to reality?

A: The party’s democratic principles serve as the cornerstone of its ideology, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and transparency. Despite any external noise or internal dissent, I must stress that for the APC in Edo state these principles continue to guide its actions and decisions. In our kind of political landscape where opinions may differ, the party strives to uphold a democratic process that respects the rights and voices of all its members.

Any suggestion of undue influence or imposition contradicts the core values of our party and its dedication to providing a level playing field for all aspirants.

In addressing the specific allegations surrounding Senator Adams Oshiomhole allegedly imposing a preferred governorship aspirant, we have heard they said he is acting on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Some say he is acting alone. But we know that the party is bigger than one person. The All Progressives Congress (APC) is not aware of any such imposition. The party functions independently, with decisions being a product of collective deliberation among its members.

While it is not uncommon for leaders within a political party to express their preferences for certain Aspirants, it is essential to distinguish between expressing a choice and imposing it. The APC maintains that the ultimate decision-making authority lies with its diverse membership who are coming out en masse in Saturday to make their choice. For me, Leadership endorsements or preferences do not equate to imposition. I think this applies to the APC. Q: Are you saying that your party primary will be an open contest, free, fair and credible on February 17?

We are not like others.
