Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has formally defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling an early realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, announced his decision on Tuesday at the Nike Lake Resort, describing the move as a strategic step in what he termed a national “rescue mission” to reclaim Nigeria’s future.
Addressing supporters and party stakeholders, Obi said the ADC platform offers a broader coalition capable of confronting the country’s deepening economic, security and governance challenges. He stressed that the decision was driven by national interest rather than personal ambition, insisting that Nigeria requires a united and credible opposition to chart a new course.
“This is about building a collective movement that places competence, accountability and the welfare of Nigerians at the centre of governance,” Obi said, as he rallied opposition forces to close ranks ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Obi emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 elections, where he galvanised significant youth support and altered traditional voting patterns, particularly in urban centres. His departure from the party marks a significant turning point and is expected to trigger fresh political calculations across the opposition bloc.
The African Democratic Congress, which has been positioning itself as a coalition vehicle for opposition figures, has in recent months intensified efforts to attract prominent political actors in preparation for 2027.
Political analysts say Obi’s defection could reshape opposition dynamics, potentially accelerating talks on a unified front to challenge the ruling party in the next general elections.
