The Ogun State Police Command has expressed worries over the spate of gas explosions in Abeokuta, the state capital, killing not less than six persons and injuring eight others within the last one week.
Consequently, the Command has, alongside other security and government agencies in the state, constituted a technical investigative team to unearth the immediate cause, even as it has ordered the sealing-off of two oxygen gas plants, suspected to have supplied the gas and cylinders that wrecked the havoc.
Samples of the gas from the plants have, however, been taken by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) for analysis.
Making this development known in a press statement issued by the Command’s spokesman (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, he said, to forestall a reoccurrence of the debilitating incident, the Police have directed that, while the investigation was ongoing, all welders within the state should desist from using oxygen gas and cooking gas at the same time, while carrying out their welding jobs.
The Command also charged Area commanders and DPOs to ensure strict compliance of the directives to welders in their areas of jurisdictions this: “disseminate this information to welders and their associations as well as maintenance technicians in their respective jurisdictions and monitor compliance”.
In his words, Oyeyemi said: “Meanwhile, pending the outcome of the investigation, which will also be made public, and in order to prevent further disaster, welders throughout the state are advised to stop using oxygen gas simultaneously with Liquified Petroleum Gas-LPG (cooking gas), while carrying out their welding jobs”.
