Weeks of exciting football action came to a close at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Sports Complex, Benin City, as the Benin Recreation Club (BRC) football team emerged second runners-up at the 9th edition of the UBTH Annual Interprofessional/Veterans Football Championship, popularly known as the CMD Cup.
The championship, which brought together professionals from various sectors, once again lived up to its billing as a vibrant platform for promoting unity, networking, sportsmanship, and healthy competition within and beyond the medical community.
Reacting to the team’s performance, the Public Relations Officer of Benin Recreation Club, Edoko Wilson Edoko, described the achievement as a true reflection of the determination, discipline, and focus exhibited by the players throughout the tournament.
He commended the team for flying the Club’s flag with pride and resilience, noting that the result further reinforces BRC’s established reputation in veterans and interprofessional football competitions.
The Captain of the BRC Football/Swimming Section, Mr. Thompson Osaghae, also applauded the team’s spirited display, praising the players for their unity, commitment, and fighting spirit from the opening match to the final whistle of the competition.
In the same vein, the Vice Captain and Team Leader, Mr. Joel Obeto, expressed delight over the third-place finish, describing it as a deserving reward for the team’s hard work, teamwork, and consistent preparation.
The Benin Recreation Club football team capped their impressive campaign with a 1–0 victory over Dominion FC in the third-place encounter, earning a cash prize of ₦300,000 and bringing their participation at the prestigious tournament to a successful close.
