…Court case backfires on Gov’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo
…as protesters shame, embarrass Obaseki
From Grace Osarogiuwa
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki is reportedly in a bad mood following the court case involving the Oba of Benin and some dissident suspended Enigies, with whom the governor was pictured in a viral photograph.
“The governor is in a fix,” our source said yesterday. “He never thought it would turn out to be a protest against him at a time when he has a candidate standing in a crucial election. Nothing can be more disappointing and distressing than Thursday’s demonstration by palace chiefs and priests,” the source told our reporter.
For Mr. Asue Ighodalo, Obaseki has summoned an emergency meeting of the Enigies in the government house, where he has allegedly given them some money to withdraw the case, and that they should refile the case when Asue Ighodalo becomes governor.
According to the source, “the report reaching me now is that the Governor is being advised to tactically ask his cohort Enigies to withdraw the suit against the Oba of Benin because of the negative effect it may have on the forthcoming election”.
Governor Obaseki, who was reported to have heeded the counsel, asked the parties involved in the suit to withdraw the case so that he won’t be seen to be involved in it.
Yesterday, protesters spoke of how the governor surreptitiously sponsored the balkanization of the royal kingdom before leaving office.
Government House sources described the protest as an attack on the governor, saying “it was tragic and embarrassing and so, he’s backtracking on his support for the renegade Enigies”, it was learnt.
