Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has distanced himself from governors who suggested their inability to meet the N62,000 minimum wage, pending the consensus between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Governor Idris expressed his unawareness of the meeting where governors conveyed their stance on the contentious N62,000 minimum wage.
As a former unionist turned governor and a member of the negotiating committee, Governor Idris has been actively involved in mediating between the federal government and organized labor regarding the minimum wage issue. He stated that he did not attend the said meeting, if it occurred, and firmly asserted his commitment to paying the agreed minimum wage, as he had previously stated in various public engagements.
Governor Idris emphasized his dedication to advocating for workers’ welfare and fair compensation, promising to uphold the agreed-upon amount for Kebbi State workers. He urged both the federal government and organized labor to compromise to achieve a mutually acceptable and sustainable living wage.
It’s worth noting that certain governors in Nigeria have reportedly expressed their inability to pay the N62,000 minimum wage, regardless of the outcome of negotiations between labor and the federal government.
