A massive fire erupted at the Ajah Market near Alesh Bus Stop in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Sunday night, November 3, destroying goods estimated to be worth millions of Naira. The fire reportedly ignited around 9 p.m., engulfing several shops and stores filled with highly flammable materials.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), led by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, responded promptly to the emergency. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services also joined in efforts to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, Uptown Press learned that, authorities have confirmed that no casualties or injuries occurred as the market was closed at the time of the incident.
“The LASEMA Response Team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, managed to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement. “Efforts are on-going to completely extinguish the fire and salvage any remaining valuables.”
The incident has caused significant losses for traders whose stores were stocked with merchandise for the week ahead.
