The Edo State Government has pledged to strengthen its efforts in tackling irregular migration among youths through a partnership with an Italian delegation, led by Dr. Alberto Cilala, a consultant to the European Union and President of Mattei Africa for Humanitarian Aids Initiative. This commitment was outlined by Mrs. Edesili Anani, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, during a meeting on Friday in Benin City.
Speaking at the Government House, Mrs. Anani highlighted the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration’s readiness to address the growing issue of irregular migration in the State. She expressed her appreciation for the collaboration, which she believes will significantly benefit Edo residents.
“We are excited about this partnership as it presents an opportunity to reduce unemployment, create jobs, and tackle issues like human trafficking and irregular migration,” Mrs. Anani said. “In addition to job creation, the initiative will bolster education, skill acquisition, agricultural investment, and infrastructure development across the state.”
Dr. Cilala, who was accompanied by other members of the delegation, explained that the Mattei Plan, which has been fully funded by the Italian Government, is designed to focus on six key sectors: education and training, health, security, agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure development. According to Dr. Cilala, the programme is specifically aimed at promoting sustainable development and improving living standards, particularly in rural areas.
“This initiative will equip residents of Edo State with valuable skills such as tailoring, shoemaking, and furniture-making, which will enhance their employability and livelihood,” Dr. Cilala added.
The Mattei Plan is part of a broader Italian Government strategy to support development in nine African countries. Solomon Okoduwa, former Senior Special Assistant to the Edo State Government on Anti-Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration, praised the initiative for prioritising practical measures to reduce human trafficking and migration.
“Although the project involves several African nations, Edo State is a key partner, and we are confident that this will strengthen the relationship between our state and Italy,” Okoduwa stated.
Popular Nigerian musician and Brand Ambassador for the Mattei Plan, Olorogun John Paul, also known as Daddy Showkey, expressed his support for the initiative. He remarked, “This programme offers invaluable training opportunities that will empower Edo State residents, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills for a sustainable future.”
The partnership promises to play a key role in addressing some of the pressing challenges facing Edo State while fostering long-term economic growth and community development.
