In a move to address escalating insecurity issues, HRH Oba Emmanuel Adeche Saiki II, the Otaru of Igarra and patriarch of the Akuku clan in the Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State, has announced the suspension of the annual Ekuechi masquerade festival. This decision comes in the wake of violent clashes that have recently disrupted the harmony of the community.
During a meeting at his palace in Igarra with representatives from the community’s traditional council and various security agencies, the traditional ruler declared that the suspension would take effect on February 15th. The festival, which is traditionally a colourful and lively celebration, has recently been marred by serious conflict, resulting in injuries and property damage.
Oba Saiki explained, “I am here to announce the suspension of the Ekuechi masquerade festival until further notice. It has come to my attention that this year’s festivities, held on January 26th, 28th and 29th, led to a series of violent confrontations between competing masquerade groups. The resulting chaos has posed a significant threat to our community’s safety.”
The traditional ruler has urged law enforcement to enforce this suspension strictly, warning that any groups attempting to hold celebrations would face arrest. An appeal has also been made to the Opoze age group, requesting their assistance in monitoring the situation and ensuring compliance with the order.
High Chief Onimisi Oduwa, the Oshemdase of Igarra, expressed support for the suspension, stating, “The decision is a necessary step towards maintaining peace in our community. While the Ekuechi festival is an important cultural event, the rise in insecurity has forced us to prioritise the safety of our people.”
The meeting saw the participation of various security bodies, including the Divisional Police Office of Igarra Division, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Department of State Security (DSS), all of which are now tasked with implementing measures to ensure peace until the situation improves.
