The Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Most Reverend Gabriel Dunia, has launched a scathing attack on the police following the tragic murder of a kidnapped seminarian. The bishop asserted that the law enforcement agency’s mishandling of the rescue operation directly led to the untimely death of the 21-year-old victim.
Speaking in a telephone interview with journalists, Bishop Dunia did not hold back his sentiments, praising the Edo State government’s commitment to rescuing those taken captive while harshly critiquing the lacklustre efforts of the police. “The responsibility of securing our citizens lies squarely with the police,” he stated, emphasising that their reliance on the seminarian’s family and community to secure his freedom was utterly inadequate.
The bishop went further, alleging outright complicity on the part of the police in the abduction, claiming it was evident that they were in cahoots with the kidnappers. “It is unacceptable that instead of safeguarding our community, they appear to be working against it,” he exclaimed, drawing attention to the disheartening contrast between the state’s vigorous rescue efforts and the police’s apparent negligence.
Bishop Dunia condemned a premature police statement that falsely asserted several kidnappers had been killed in a shootout with officers. This inaccurate disclosure, he argued, may have spurred the assailants to act, resulting in the seminarian’s tragic demise. “This gross miscommunication has blood on its hands,” he lamented.
Despite the pain of loss, Bishop Dunia expressed his deep gratitude to all who rallied in prayer and provided moral support during the harrowing ordeal of Reverend Ekweli and the seminarian.
