Mr. Chris Ojeikere, one of the spokesmen for the Dr. Asue Ighodalo Governorship Campaign Council, has officially resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Ojeikere, who had been a prominent figure within the PDP, was recently appointed as the Publicity Secretary of the Edo State chapter of the SDP by the newly elected executive committee led by Mr. Felix Obayagbon.

In a statement following his appointment, Ojeikere expressed his commitment to the SDP, stating that he had accepted the responsibility with a strong sense of dedication to the party’s core ideology of “social democracy”. He noted that this ideology resonated with his own world view and principles.

“Social democracy, with its emphasis on equality, justice, and the welfare of the people, aligns with what I believe Nigeria urgently needs at this juncture,” Ojeikere said. “It is this vision that I am committed to advancing within the SDP.”

Ojeikere’s defection from the PDP comes at a time of heightened political tension in the country, with the former spokesman citing his dissatisfaction with the PDP’s failure to serve as an effective opposition party. According to Ojeikere, the PDP has been “colonised” by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), making it incapable of providing a credible alternative to the current administration.

“I have observed the direction the PDP has taken, and after careful reflection, I concluded that it no longer serves its purpose as an opposition party. The party has been annexed by the forces of the APC, losing its original ideological direction,” Ojeikere remarked. “I believe the time has come to align myself with the emerging opposition coalition that is dedicated to rescuing Nigeria from the current mismanagement.”

Despite his departure from the PDP, Ojeikere made it clear that he remains steadfast in his commitment to the Ighodalo cause. He reaffirmed his support for Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the September 2021 Edo State elections, and vowed to continue the fight to reclaim what he described as Ighodalo’s “freely given mandate” in the election.

“I remain firmly in the struggle to reclaim the mandate freely given to Dr. Ighodalo in the last governorship election. This fight is far from over, and I will continue to stand by the principles of justice and fairness,” Ojeikere added.

A long-time member of the Edo Forum of Patriots, Ojeikere has been an active participant in advocating for the progress and development of the state. He reiterated that his decision to join the SDP was not a departure from his commitment to the people of Edo but rather an extension of his efforts to bring about real change.

“As a passionate Pan-Edo patriot, my primary focus will always be the well-being of the people of Edo. My allegiance is to the people of this state, and I will continue to fight for the very best for Edo, regardless of political affiliations,” he concluded.
