ABUJA — Former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has formally submitted his application to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a fresh chapter in the evolving opposition alliance seeking to dislodge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
According to sources familiar with the development, Obi made it clear in his application that he would serve only one term if elected President, asserting that four years would be sufficient to commence the urgent transformation Nigeria requires.
He also categorically ruled out any joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or serving as a deputy to any other candidate, underscoring his intention to run as the sole presidential flagbearer under the new opposition coalition.
This latest political move follows the collapse of plans to register a new party under the name African Democratic Alliance (ADA), after multiple interest groups reportedly attempted to secure the same acronym. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejected the ADA name to prevent confusion among the electorate, prompting the coalition to adopt the already-registered ADC as its political platform.
In a related shake-up within the ADC, former Senate President, Senator David Mark, has emerged as the interim national chairman, after quietly exiting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, has also been named the interim national secretary, suggesting a broad-based reconfiguration of political alliances across Nigeria’s opposition ranks.
Although Mr Obi’s defection to ADC has yet to be officially announced, party insiders say a public declaration is imminent and will be made at a major event in the coming days.
Observers believe Obi’s entry into the ADC and his firm one-term pledge may set the tone for a policy-driven campaign focused on urgency, reform, and a break from Nigeria’s traditional political alliances.
