The Chief Imam of Uromi, Sheikh Moritada Obhakhoboh, who was abducted by gunmen on 7th July, has regained his freedom, the Edo State Police Command confirmed on Monday night.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, the cleric was released unhurt following what he described as “intense and sustained pressure” mounted on the kidnappers by security forces.
Sheikh Obhakhoboh was abducted in the Angle 80 area of Uromi, sparking widespread concern within the community. His safe return comes after swift police action, which began immediately after the incident was reported to the Uromi Divisional Headquarters on 8th July.
Yamu disclosed that tactical teams, working in conjunction with members of a local vigilante group, were mobilised to track the kidnappers and secure the cleric’s release.
Commending the efforts of the officers involved, Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, expressed gratitude for the successful operation and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“No stone will be left unturned in identifying and apprehending those behind the kidnapping,” CP Agbonika said.
The police also urged residents of Edo State to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by providing useful information that could aid in ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal activities.
Sheikh Obhakhoboh has since been reunited with his family.
