Panic gripped Oyorokoto Community Primary School in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday after a section of the school building suddenly collapsed during school hours, leaving the head teacher seriously injured and causing widespread alarm over the safety of pupils and staff.
According to eyewitnesses, part of the structure gave way without warning, sending debris crashing down while lessons were underway. Though no pupil was physically harmed, the collapse caused chaos, with children and teachers fleeing the scene in fear.
The head teacher, who was reportedly inside the affected section at the time, suffered a head injury from falling rubble. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment and is said to be in a stable condition.
Photographs taken shortly after the collapse show broken walls and exposed roofing, highlighting the dilapidated state of the building and intensifying public outcry for urgent government intervention.
Residents, parents, and members of the local community have since condemned the poor condition of the school, calling on the Rivers State Government and relevant agencies to carry out a full structural audit of the premises. They insist that the incident should serve as a wake-up call to prioritise the safety of school infrastructure.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen. We’re lucky no child died today,” said one concerned parent. “The government must not wait until lives are lost before they act.”
As of press time, officials from the Ministry of Education are yet to release a formal statement on the matter. Meanwhile, classes have been suspended pending a thorough inspection of the premises.
