President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on members of the Super Falcons in recognition of their triumphant outing at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they emerged champions for a record-extending 10th time.
Receiving the players and technical crew at the Presidential Villa on Monday, President Tinubu extolled the team’s display of “indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage,” describing their victory as not just historic, but a moment of immense national pride.
As a mark of appreciation for their outstanding achievement, the President conferred on each player the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), placing them among the nation’s distinguished citizens.
In addition to the national recognition, President Tinubu announced a generous monetary reward of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew. He further gifted each player a fully furnished three-bedroom flat, a gesture aimed at improving their welfare and acknowledging their commitment to the country.
“The Super Falcons have not only made Nigeria proud, but have also inspired a generation of young girls across the country,” the President remarked. “Their triumph in Morocco is a shining example of what our sportsmen and women can achieve when given the right support and motivation.”
The event at the Villa was marked by jubilant celebrations as the players, adorned in green and white, expressed gratitude to the President for his magnanimity and recognition of their efforts.
Team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, who spoke on behalf of the players, thanked President Tinubu for the honours and rewards, stating that the gesture would go a long way in boosting morale and encouraging future performance.
The President’s gesture has drawn commendations from sports stakeholders and Nigerians at large, many of whom see it as a positive step toward greater investment and recognition for women’s football in the country.
The Super Falcons’ latest WAFCON triumph is being hailed as one of the most dramatic and hard-fought in the tournament’s history, as the team came from behind to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final.
