The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, has directed sons and daughters of the Benin Kingdom, as well as indigenes and non-indigenes residing in Edo State, to observe two weeks of fasting and prayers ahead of the 2025 Emorhϙ (new yam festival).
In a statement on Monday, Chief Efosa Igbinomwanhia, the Obamedo of Benin, announced that the spiritual exercise will run from 15 to 28 September, with participants expected to fast daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The directive, issued under the authority of Oba Ewuare II, extends to Edo indigenes in the diaspora. According to the palace, the exercise is rooted in Benin tradition and is aimed at seeking God’s blessings and the royal ancestors’ intercession for a bountiful harvest, protection from sudden death, and peace in homes, families, Edo State, and Nigeria at large.
The new yam festival, one of the kingdom’s most significant cultural events, marks the symbolic start of the harvest season.
