The revered Oba of Benin, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, has called on all sons and daughters of Edo, both in Nigeria and the diaspora, to join him in two weeks of fasting and prayer.
This spiritual exercise, set to begin on September 26th and end on October 9th, 2024, will run daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The announcement was made by Chief Stanley Obamwonyi, the Esere of Benin, in a statement authorised by the Oba of Benin.
The fasting and prayer are part of preparations for the traditional New Yam Festival (Emorhϙ), an age-old custom that has been observed for centuries in the Benin Kingdom.
This sacred festival marks the commencement of the consumption of the annual new yam in the Oba’s palace, symbolising prosperity and abundance for the year.
The Oba urged the people of Edo to seek divine blessings for a bountiful harvest in 2024 and to offer prayers of gratitude for the peaceful conduct of the September 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election.
In addition, the prayers are intended to invoke protection from calamities, and to seek peace for individuals, families, the state, and the entire country.
The Oba of Benin also called on participants to offer prayers to God Almighty and the ancestors to shield Edo from evil and ensure peace and prosperity in the land.
As the New Yam Festival approaches, the fasting and prayer period is expected to unify Edo indigenes and foster spiritual connection and reflection, as they give thanks and look forward to a fruitful year ahead.
