The Senate has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) not to extend the 31 December 2025 deadline for the ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small-volume PET bottles.
The upper chamber issued the directive on Thursday, stressing that the regulation must be fully enforced to address the rising cases of substance abuse, underage drinking, and health risks linked to the easy availability of cheap alcohol.
Lawmakers maintained that the decision to phase out sachet and mini-bottle alcoholic drinks was in the national interest, citing concerns over their widespread consumption by minors and their contribution to social vices.
The Senate urged NAFDAC to ensure strict compliance with the policy and to intensify public awareness campaigns to help manufacturers and distributors prepare for the transition before the deadline.
It also called on relevant agencies to support local producers in adopting safer packaging and distribution standards that align with national health and safety objectives.
The directive reaffirms the federal government’s commitment to regulating the alcohol industry and safeguarding public health as part of broader efforts to combat drug and substance abuse across Nigeria.
