President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a high-powered delegation to London to initiate talks with the British government on the possible transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to Nigeria to complete his prison sentence.
The delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), met with officials of the UK Ministry of Justice on Monday. Their mission followed a directive from the Presidency to explore diplomatic and legal options under international prisoner-transfer frameworks.
Ekweremadu is currently serving a nine-year, eight-month sentence in the United Kingdom after being convicted under the country’s Modern Slavery Act for attempting to procure a kidney donor for his ailing daughter. His wife, Beatrice, has since returned to Nigeria after serving part of her own term.
Presidency sources say the move forms part of broader efforts to ensure that Nigerian citizens convicted abroad are afforded fair treatment and, where possible, the opportunity to serve their sentences closer to home.
If approved by both governments, the transfer deal could see Ekweremadu relocated to a Nigerian correctional facility to serve out the remainder of his jail term.
Diplomatic consultations are said to be ongoing, with further updates expected in the coming days.
