Residents of Emeyal 1 community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State were drawn into an unforgettable farewell last week as an 85-year-old woman, Madam Afuwari Ego, was laid to rest in a casket shaped like a giant Coca-Cola bottle, a burial that quickly captured national attention and sparked widespread public reaction.
The unconventional coffin, which became the centrepiece of the funeral, was photographed by blogger Ogbara Walson Henry, whose images spread rapidly online and beyond the community. Guests and neighbours described the scene as both surprising and symbolic, marking one of the most visually distinctive funerals the area has witnessed.
Family members said the decision was deeply personal rather than theatrical. They revealed that Madam Ego had an enduring love for Coca-Cola throughout her lifetime, and the bespoke casket was designed to honour that passion. The family insisted the gesture was a tribute to her joyful personality, rather than a bid for spectacle.
