The Edo State Police Command has deployed more than 5,000 officers across the State to tighten security and forestall criminal activity during and after the Yuletide.
The heavy security operation, which covers Benin City and other parts of the state, is aimed at protecting lives and property amid heightened movement associated with the festive season. Police authorities said the deployment includes increased roadblocks and checkpoints along major highways and strategic locations, informed by prevailing crime trends.
According to the Command, officers have been directed to conduct lawful stop-and-search operations to deter crime, intercept criminal elements and ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens. The measures, it added, are also designed to compel vehicles to slow down at critical points, reducing the risk of attacks on security personnel and road users.
The Police Command expressed concern over casualties recorded in the past year, revealing that about eight police officers were injured while four lost their lives during encounters with criminal elements who resisted lawful searches and attempted to evade checkpoints through reckless driving. These incidents, the Command said, underscored the need to strengthen and sustain proactive security operations across the state.
Appealing for public cooperation, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, urged residents to slow down at checkpoints, remain patient and civil, and submit to lawful inquiries. He emphasised that such cooperation is vital to ensuring a peaceful festive season for all.
The Command reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on extortion and unprofessional conduct, assuring residents that all officers have been warned to act within the bounds of the law.
