Former senator representing Edo North, Francis Asekhame Alimikhena, has ascended the throne as the new Okumagbe of Uwanno Kingdom in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, marking a significant transition in the traditional leadership of the ancient kingdom.
Uptown Press gathered on Saturday that Alimikhena succeeded the late monarch, Dr George Oshiapi Egabor, whose reign spanned more than two decades. The emergence of the former lawmaker as Okumagbe has been greeted with prayers and goodwill from residents, who expressed hope that his reign would usher in progress, unity and prosperity across Uwanno Kingdom.
Uwanno Kingdom, with its headquarters in Agenebode, is one of the prominent traditional domains in Edo North, and the installation of a new monarch is viewed as a defining moment in its socio-cultural history.
Meanwhile, the Okumagbe-in-Council, in conjunction with the National Burial Committee, has released the programme of events for the final burial rites of the late Okumagbe, Dr Egabor.
According to a statement issued by the committee, the funeral ceremonies will commence on February 4, 2026, with a memorial mass and the signing of the condolence register at the Royal Palace in Agenebode. A reception and celebration of life will follow on February 5 at Omoaze Primary School, also in Agenebode.
The statement noted that the four-day burial programme will feature rich cultural displays, including traditional dances and masquerade performances drawn from the four ruling houses of Uwanno Kingdom, underscoring the deep-rooted heritage of the people.
Dr Egabor, who died in December 2025 at the age of 84, was described as an accomplished accountant and a fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria. He ascended the throne in 2003 and reigned as Okumagbe of Uwanno Kingdom until his passing in 2025.
