The Lagos State Government has sealed a public toilet facility in Amuwo Odofin after it was discovered that raw sewage was being discharged directly into public drainage channels, posing significant health and environmental risks.
Officials said the enforcement action followed inspections that revealed the facility was illegally pumping untreated waste into nearby drains. The discharge of raw sewage into open drainage systems is a violation of environmental sanitation laws and threatens public health by contaminating water sources and exposing residents to waterborne diseases.
Authorities noted that such practices can lead to the spread of infections including cholera, dysentery, and other sanitation-related illnesses, particularly in densely populated communities. They stressed that proper waste management is critical to safeguarding the health of residents and maintaining a clean environment.
The government reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation regulations across the state and warned operators of public facilities to comply strictly with environmental standards. It added that routine monitoring and inspections would continue, and defaulters would face sanctions in line with existing laws.
Residents of the area were encouraged to report cases of environmental violations to appropriate authorities, as the state intensifies efforts to promote public hygiene and prevent environmental degradation.
