Onanuga’s remarks followed Obi’s suggestion during a television interview that he could exit the African Democratic Congress if its internal processes become compromised.
Reacting on X after Obi’s appearance on Arise Television Prime Time on Monday, Onanuga wrote that Obi’s history of political movement shows a pattern, referencing his past exits from the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Peoples Democratic Party, and the Labour Party.
In the interview that sparked the reaction, Obi defended his record of switching parties, insisting his decisions have always been guided by principle rather than personal gain. He maintained that he is willing to leave any political platform if it fails to uphold credible processes.
“I don’t have a long history in politics, but even if I have to move twenty times, I will. You cannot claim to pursue change using outdated systems,” he said.
Obi explained that his departure from the Labour Party was due to what he described as deliberate efforts to trap him in internal crises.
“They set the house on fire and expected me to remain inside. When I found a way out, they criticised me for not staying to put out a fire they started,” he said.
Speaking on his current position in the ADC, Obi acknowledged that some former associates from previous parties are now with him again, stressing that their present actions matter more than their past affiliations.
“What matters is not who people were before, but who they are now. We are undergoing a process together, and if that process is compromised, I will not hesitate to speak out,” he added.
He reiterated that transparency and integrity in political processes remain non-negotiable, emphasising his readiness to take bold decisions in pursuit of genuine reform.
