The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, a major decision expected to reshape the country’s political landscape ahead of the next general election.
The resolution was adopted during the party’s ongoing national convention in Abuja after a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.
Delegates at the convention unanimously agreed that after the single term allocated to the South, the presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria.
The decision is widely seen as clearing the way for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and other Southern aspirants to officially obtain the party’s presidential nomination forms.
The high-stakes convention is currently taking place at the Angeles Event Centre and Mall and has attracted several prominent political figures across the country.
Among party chieftains attending the gathering are Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, and Seriake Dickson, a national leader of the NDC.
The development is expected to intensify political permutations ahead of the 2027 presidential election as opposition forces continue realignments across party lines.
