Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has raised concerns over the rising wave of kidnappings across Nigeria, alleging that the crime is becoming more prevalent as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
The governor made the remark on Sunday during a visit to LoveWorld City (Christ Embassy) in Benin City, where he called for prayers against kidnapping, cultism and other security challenges confronting the nation.
According to Okpebholo, criminal elements must not be allowed to hold the country hostage for personal or political interests.
“As elections draw closer, kidnapping has become a growing concern in the country. This country does not belong to kidnappers. No individual or group should hold the nation captive for personal or political interests,” he said.
The governor, however, expressed optimism that with prayers and collective efforts, the security challenges facing the nation would be overcome.
He urged Nigerians to pray for peace, prosperity, good governance and economic recovery, while also calling on the congregation to remember President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in their prayers, asking God to grant him wisdom, guidance and strength to lead the country and manage the economy effectively.
Okpebholo noted that prayers for Nigeria would also translate into peace, safety and development for Edo State and other parts of the country.
In his remarks, Pastor Moses Olayemi offered prayers for Nigeria, its leaders, local government areas and the economy, seeking divine peace, protection, economic restoration and spiritual revival across the nation.
The cleric also commended the governor for ongoing developmental projects in Edo State, particularly improvements in road infrastructure.
