Three Killed as Warri-Itakpe Train Derails in Delta

Three people have been confirmed dead after a Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) train operating on the Warri-Itakpe corridor derailed in Agbor, Delta State.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, with four coaches reportedly leaving the rail track, triggering an emergency response from railway authorities and rescue teams.

Confirming the development in a statement, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, described the accident as a serious incident and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

β€œThe Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed a serious train accident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor at Agbor, Delta State,” Opeifa stated.

According to him, emergency response operations were immediately activated following the derailment, while all passengers aboard the train have since been accounted for.

β€œRescue and emergency response operations were immediately activated. All passengers on board have now been accounted for. Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time,” he said.

The NRC boss noted that relevant authorities are continuing investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the derailment, while support and assistance are being provided to affected passengers.

He added that the thoughts and prayers of the corporation and Nigerians are with the victims and their loved ones during the difficult period.

The Corporation also urged members of the public to rely on verified information and official updates as investigations and response efforts continue.

The Warri-Itakpe rail line is one of Nigeria’s busiest standard-gauge corridors, linking communities and commercial centres across several states.
