Members of the Oredo Local Government Legislative Arm have commended the Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission, Hon. Valentine Asuen, for introducing sweeping reforms aimed at repositioning the State’s forestry sector and combating illegal logging.
The 12 councillors, led by the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Reliance Okungbowa, paid a courtesy visit to the Forestry Commission Chairman at his office, where they lauded his leadership and commitment to sustainable forest management.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Okungbowa described Asuen’s appointment by Governor Monday Okpebholo as a turning point for the forestry sector, noting that the Commission has witnessed significant reforms since he assumed office.
He particularly praised Asuen’s firm stance against illegal logging, describing his efforts as a bold step towards safeguarding Edo State’s forest resources and restoring sanity to the sector.
The councillors also expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms would strengthen environmental conservation and promote the sustainable utilisation of the state’s natural resources.
Responding, Hon. Asuen appreciated the lawmakers for the visit and reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to regulate, conserve and sustainably manage Edo State’s forests and wildlife resources.
He said the Commission remains committed to achieving its mandate through sound policy implementation, strategic partnerships, capacity building and the promotion of conservation initiatives and eco-tourism.
Asuen also commended Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support and commitment to sustainable forestry practices, saying the administration’s backing has strengthened the Commission’s drive to protect the state’s forest reserves.
He urged the councillors to continue supporting the government’s developmental agenda and encouraged them to serve as worthy ambassadors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the forthcoming Edo State local government elections scheduled for Saturday.
The visit underscored the growing collaboration between the legislative arm of local government and the Edo State Forestry Commission in advancing environmental sustainability and strengthening governance at the grassroots.
