The political tension in Egor Local Government Council, Edo State, has deepened as the legislative arm, represented by six councillors, reaffirmed the removal of Hon. Eghe Ogbemudia as Chairman of the council.

The announcement was made during a press conference held in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Speaking on behalf of the councillors, Hon. Prince Godwin Uwadia Edigin, representing Ward 3 and recognised Leader of the Egor Legislative Arm, detailed the reasons behind the decision. He cited allegations of gross misconduct, financial misappropriation, and budget padding as grounds for the impeachment.

Hon. Edigin emphasised that the impeachment was a constitutional process driven by the need for accountability and good governance. “The people of Egor deserve leaders who are transparent and dedicated to their welfare,” he stated. He further dismissed claims by Hon. Omosigho, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who had issued a statement challenging the council’s decision. According to Hon. Edigin, “Omosigho lacks the authority to determine the leadership of the Egor Legislative Arm. His press statement is null and void.”

The councillors also declared the impeachment of Hon. Bose Omokaro Cynthia as Leader of the Egor Legislative Arm on June 25, 2024, and stated that she no longer has the authority to convene legislative sessions. They nullified the suspension of councillors representing Wards 02, 03, 05, and 08, affirming that such actions were unconstitutional.

Hon. Edigin expressed gratitude to stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for their efforts in promoting peace within the council but criticised Hon. Eghe Ogbemudia for refusing to embrace dialogue. “Her refusal to listen to reason and understand the essence of coexistence has led us to this impasse,” he said.

The councillors further discredited rumors linking their actions to certain individuals, including Chief Odion Olaye JP and Hon. Collins Ukponmwan, stating that their legislative duties are carried out independently and without external influence.

“We call on all stakeholders to join us in demanding good governance and accountability in Egor Local Government Area,” Edigin urged.

Present at the press briefing were Hon. Preston Eghe Amayo (Deputy Leader, Ward 5), Hon. Eguakun Kelvin Ighodaro (Majority Leader, Ward 8), Hon. Amasinmwin Odion (Chief Whip, Ward 4), Hon. Stella Ogida (Financial Secretary, National Councillors Forum, Edo State), and Hon. Nosakhare Izebuwa (Ward 10).
