The All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled a high-powered National Campaign Council for the 2026 Osun State governorship election, appointing Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as chairman to spearhead the party’s push for victory.
The party announced that Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas will serve as co-chairmen of the campaign council.
The appointments were disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
According to the statement, Ibrahim Kabir Masari, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Political and Other Matters, will serve as deputy chairman, while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has been named secretary of the council.
The APC also constituted specialised sub-committees to drive its campaign strategy, covering election planning and management, finance and resource mobilisation, grassroots mobilisation, logistics, monitoring and compliance, protocol, media and publicity, security, youth mobilisation, mobilisation of persons with disabilities, women mobilisation and secretariat functions.
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the keenly anticipated Osun governorship election, which is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested in the South-West.
Unlike previous elections dominated by a straight contest between the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the emergence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a formidable third force has significantly reshaped the political landscape.
The ADC has gained traction by attracting aggrieved APC members, particularly supporters of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, as well as younger politicians seeking an alternative platform.
Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared six political parties to participate in the poll, political observers believe the contest will largely be a three-way battle involving incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and ADC flag bearer Najeem Salaam.
Adeleke is widely regarded as entering the race with the advantage of incumbency, backed by government structures, ongoing projects, welfare programmes and a strong grassroots following, particularly in Osun West.
However, analysts believe the opposition’s fragmentation could work in his favour if votes against the incumbent are split between the APC and ADC.
For the APC, Oyebamiji’s candidacy enjoys the backing of the party’s federal leadership and the political structure built by former Governor and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola.
Despite these advantages, the party continues to grapple with internal divisions, especially the lingering rift between Oyetola and Aregbesola, a development many party loyalists believe could influence its electoral fortunes if not fully resolved before the poll.
