The Federal Government has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian primary and secondary schools for the 2026–2028 academic period.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced the release on Monday, following the completion of the first phase of the National Textbook Ranking Exercise.
A statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, said the first phase covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1).
The ministry said each approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside details including the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
According to the ministry, the new tracking system is designed to strengthen the identification, monitoring and accountability of approved instructional materials and improve transparency in their selection, procurement and utilisation.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of Education Minister, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by the Minister of Education.
The ministry explained that the process of generating and assigning unique tracking codes to the ranked textbooks contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.
The ranking exercise will continue in phases, with the second phase expected to cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2. The same identification and tracking measures will apply to the next phase.
The Federal Ministry of Education urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or procuring textbooks for the affected classes.
It also directed stakeholders to adhere to the approved list in providing and using textbooks for the specified classes, as the Federal Government moves to tighten oversight of instructional materials in Nigerian schools.
