The Federal Government has approved an increase in the feeding budget for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation course, in a move aimed at improving welfare in camps across the country.

The approval is expected to strengthen feeding arrangements for thousands of corps members undergoing the compulsory orientation exercise.

The orientation course exposes prospective corps members to military-style drills, physical training, leadership development, lectures on national unity and skills acquisition programmes designed to prepare them for national service.

Given the demanding camp routine, adequate feeding is essential to maintaining corps members’ health, energy and general well-being throughout the exercise.

The budget increase signals the government’s recognition of the need to provide better welfare support for young graduates participating in the national service scheme.

However, the actual impact of the decision will depend on how the additional funds are deployed, particularly whether they translate into better meals, adequate food supplies and improved feeding conditions in orientation camps.

Details of the approved increase, the revised feeding allowance per corps member and the date the new allocation will take effect were not provided in the information available for this report.

Established in 1973, the NYSC scheme promotes national integration by deploying Nigerian graduates to states outside their places of origin for a year of national service.

The key test of the latest approval will be whether corps members experience a noticeable improvement in the quality and quantity of meals served in camps nationwide.
