Nigeria’s Super Falcons have thrashed Comoros 5-0 in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic qualifiers at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, securing a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory to advance to the next round.
However, the emphatic win was overshadowed by an injury to captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was taken to the hospital for an MRI scan to determine the extent of the damage.
The team’s medical staff confirmed that Ajibade would undergo the scan, adding that an update on her condition would be communicated once the results became available.
The forward sustained the injury in the 24th minute of the encounter and was forced off, raising concerns over her availability for Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures.
On the pitch, Uchenna Kanu and Toni Payne each scored twice, while Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty to complete the five-goal rout.
The Super Falcons improved their attacking intensity as the match progressed, making the most of their opportunities to secure a comprehensive victory over the Comoros side.
Folashade Ijamilusi, who replaced the injured Ajibade, made an immediate impact by providing two assists, while Blessing Okpe, introduced for Gift Monday, registered an assist and won the penalty converted by Ucheibe.
The victory also offered debutants valuable international experience as Nigeria continued its campaign for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Attention will now turn to Ajibade’s MRI results, with the national team hoping the captain’s injury is not serious ahead of the next round.
Nigeria will face Morocco in what is expected to be a tougher test of its Olympic ambitions. The Falcons will need to maintain their attacking form and defensive discipline as the qualification campaign intensifies.
For now, the team can celebrate a convincing victory, but Ajibade’s fitness remains a major concern as the next challenge approaches.
