Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director, Austine Eguavoen, has been appointed interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
Eguavoen takes charge of the nine-time African champions following the dismissal of former head coach Justin Madugu, with the NFF moving swiftly to stabilise the team ahead of the crucial qualifiers.
He will be assisted by Christopher Danjuma, former manager of the Falconets, and former Super Falcons defender-turned-coach, Ayisat Yusuf.
The interim coaching team faces its first major assignment against Comoros in the second round of the African qualifiers for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The two-legged fixture is scheduled for October 9 and 13, 2026, with both matches billed to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.
Nigeria secured a bye into the second round, while Comoros booked their place after crushing Sudan 30-0 on aggregate in the opening round.
Eguavoen’s appointment comes at a critical period for the Super Falcons, who will be under pressure to secure qualification for the Olympic tournament after Nigeria’s recent setbacks on the international stage.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons have suffered another setback following confirmation that Washington Spirit midfielder Deborah Abiodun will miss the remainder of the season because of injury.
The 22-year-old midfielder is scheduled to undergo surgery this week, effectively bringing her campaign with the NWSL club to an early end.
Abiodun made nine appearances for Washington Spirit in all competitions this season, starting four matches and recording 320 minutes of action.
Her injury represents a significant blow to both Washington Spirit and the Super Falcons, particularly with Nigeria preparing for the Olympic qualifiers against Comoros.
With the Olympic qualification campaign fast approaching, Eguavoen and his assistants will now have the task of rebuilding momentum, managing key personnel and ensuring the Falcons hit the ground running when the qualifiers begin in October.
