The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has commended the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his commitment to strengthening security in the state, particularly through the planned establishment of the Nigerian Army’s 83 Division in Edo.

Okpebholo gave the commendation on Friday when Shaibu paid a courtesy visit to the Edo Government House in Benin City.

The governor expressed delight at receiving the Army chief and his entourage, revealing that he had deliberately postponed his planned trip outside the state to personally welcome him.

He described the relationship between Shaibu and Edo as special, noting that the Army chief had demonstrated particular interest in addressing security concerns in the state since assuming office.

“I think there is something special between you and Edo because, since you came into office, you have specially paid attention to things about Edo, most especially the 83 Division that is coming to our state,” Okpebholo said.

He described the planned establishment of the 83 Division as a significant development, adding that residents of the state were excited about the prospect.

The governor also praised Shaibu for appointing a Brigade Commander whose activities, according to him, had contributed significantly to improving security across Edo.

“Let me tell you, the best gift that you have given me is the Brigade Commander that you brought to Edo.

“Since I became the governor, his coming is like a comfort to me because today, nobody is talking about kidnapping in our state,” he said.

Okpebholo said the Brigade Commander had remained committed to maintaining peace and security, adding that personnel of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies had demonstrated readiness to respond swiftly to emerging security threats.

Recalling the security challenges previously experienced in Ekpoma, the governor said residents who once struggled to sleep peacefully could now go about their daily activities without fear.

“As I speak to you, Ekpoma is in peace. People can now go to their farms,” he said.

He also identified Okpella as another community that had experienced security challenges but noted that the intervention of security agencies had helped restore peace and stability.

The governor described the Brigade Commander as a dedicated officer committed to serving the people and sustaining security across the state.

“There is nothing he is not doing to restore peace across the state. I am happy working with him. He is someone that is ready to work for the people and ready to serve,” Okpebholo said.

He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army for its continued support in securing Edo and assured Shaibu of his administration’s commitment to sustaining cooperation with the military.

Earlier, Shaibu commended the governor for his administration’s support and commitment to the Nigerian Army in Edo.

He also explained that senior officers promoted to the rank of Major-General were encouraged to give back to their communities in appreciation of the support and contributions that had shaped their growth and development.

Shaibu thanked Okpebholo for his administration’s continued support for the Nigerian Army and wished him a prosperous tenure.

He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between the military and the Edo State Government would further strengthen security and promote development across the state.
