Residents of Kuchibuyi Village, Kubwa, were left stunned after a local herbalist, Ismail Usman, accidentally shot himself while testing the effectiveness of a purported “bulletproof” charm. The incident, which occurred on Friday, November 23, 2024, has ignited debate about the dangers of unverified traditional practices.
According to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Usman, widely known in the area for his unconventional methods, used a shotgun to test his charm’s protective powers. Unfortunately, the charm failed to deliver, leaving the herbalist with severe injuries to his abdomen.
Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh stated, “The FCT Police Command received a distress call from a concerned resident, Shandam Michael, reporting the unfortunate incident. Officers from the Byazhin Division responded immediately and found the victim in critical condition.”
Usman was initially rushed to Kubwa General Hospital for emergency care before being transferred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital for advanced treatment.
In addition to treating the herbalist’s injuries, authorities launched an investigation into the matter. A search of his residence uncovered the shotgun used in the incident, alongside various charms and traditional paraphernalia believed to be linked to his experiment.
SP Adeh further revealed that Usman would face legal action once he recovers, as the possession of an unlicensed firearm and the act of shooting himself both contravene the law. “He will be charged with unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide under Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria,” she added.
Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to report any cases involving illegal firearms or risky traditional practices to the authorities for prompt intervention.
