Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, has taken a swipe at Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over the singer’s appeal to US President Donald Trump concerning the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
Afegbua described Davido’s intervention as “arrant nonsense,” urging the singer to stay focused on his music career rather than meddling in Nigerian politics.
The commissioner spoke on Thursday in Benin City during a press briefing, reacting to Davido’s recent open letter to Trump and the international community.
In the letter shared on X, Davido urged Trump and other international actors to closely monitor the Osun election, expressing concerns over possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.
He called for measures to protect voters and ensure that every vote cast in the election is respected.
But Afegbua dismissed the intervention, questioning Davido’s interest in Nigerian politics and suggesting that the singer should concentrate on producing music capable of earning him a Grammy.
The commissioner also defended Governor Monday Okpebholo’s decision to campaign for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Osun election, arguing that political leaders have the right to support their party and its candidates.
Afegbua further dismissed allegations circulating online concerning Governor Okpebholo’s academic qualifications, describing them as fabricated.
Turning his attention to the political contest in Osun, he made a reference to the academic record of the state’s incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, while also taking a swipe at his dancing reputation.
“Adeleke got F9 in his result. There is no harm in having a dancer as a Governor. Is he not a dancer?” he said.
Davido’s decision to appeal directly to Trump has since triggered contrasting reactions.
Former Senator Shehu Sani criticised the move, describing it as a waste of time and arguing that the US president is unlikely to be concerned about the credibility of an African election.
Others, however, have defended Davido’s intervention, arguing that drawing international attention to the election could help strengthen scrutiny and encourage authorities to uphold democratic standards.
The Osun State governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
