The President-General of the Akwa Ibom community in Edo State, Chief Eddy Ibanga, has praised the Edo State Government for extending financial support to a young indigent couple, Mr. Saviour Sunday and Mrs. Beauty Sunday, enabling them to discharge their newborn baby from the hospital.
The baby, delivered at St. Philomena Hospital in Benin City, had remained in the hospital for days due to the couple’s inability to settle the medical bills. Their situation, however, took a positive turn after the intervention of the Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Chief Ibanga expressed deep appreciation to the governor and the Office of the First Lady for their swift and generous assistance.
“As a resident of Edo State for over 40 years, I must say that this act of kindness is unprecedented,” Ibanga stated. “It is a testament to the compassionate nature of the Edo State Government that they would extend a helping hand to non-indigenes in need.”
He also commended the recent employment of Mrs. Beauty Sunday as a cleaner under Governor Okpebholo’s administration, describing it as a step towards empowerment and social inclusion.
The community leader did not fail to acknowledge the role of the media, especially the Edo State correspondent of The Pioneer newspaper, whose report brought the couple’s plight to public attention.
“Their reportage helped to mobilise support and assistance for the family,” he said. “I pray that the good Lord will reward them bountifully for their kindness.”
Chief Ibanga further thanked Flora, a digital banker and social media personality, who amplified the newspaper report and helped draw wider public and government attention to the matter.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to St. Philomena Hospital for rendering emergency medical services to the newborn without demanding payment upfront — a gesture that stood in sharp contrast to the response from other private hospitals the couple had previously visited.
On behalf of the Akwa Ibom community in Edo, Chief Ibanga extended appreciation to all individuals and groups who contributed, both financially and morally, to the baby’s recovery.
“May God bless and reward you all,” he said. “We pray that this child will grow up to hear the story of this remarkable kindness and be inspired to do same for others. As law-abiding and dutiful residents of Edo State, we remain grateful and blessed.”
