The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has elected Comrade Alhassan Yahaya from Gombe State as its new National President. Yahaya secured a decisive victory during the 8th Triennial Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State, garnering 436 votes to defeat Mr. Dele Atunbi, the incumbent National Treasurer, who polled 97 votes, and Mr. Garba, who received 39 votes.
Before his election, Comrade Yahaya served as the National Deputy President of the union, a role in which he played a pivotal part in advancing the NUJ’s objectives. His win signals a significant shift in leadership, with members expressing confidence in his ability to chart a new course for the organisation.
In an unopposed contest, Mrs. Abimbola Oyetunde, a Deputy Director with Radio Nigeria, emerged as the Deputy National President, while Ronke Afebioye Samo from the Ekiti State Council retained her position as Vice President, Zone B, also unopposed.
Other key positions in the Union’s executive committee were filled without contest, reflecting broad consensus among delegates.
During his acceptance speech, Yahaya promised to prioritise the welfare of journalists, tackle industry challenges, and uphold press freedom. “Our union must remain a strong pillar of democracy, and I am committed to ensuring that we continue to uphold truth, integrity, and professionalism in journalism,” he said.
Outgoing National President, Comrade Christopher Isiguzo, commended the election process and pledged to support a smooth transition. He assured members that the new leadership would have his full backing as they work to further the union’s goals.
The Yahaya-led administration is set to steer the affairs of the NUJ for the next three years, with expectations running high for reforms and renewed vigour in addressing the concerns of journalists across Nigeria.
His victory ushers in a new chapter for the union, one that promises to strengthen the voice of the media and advocate for better conditions for its members.
