The Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State, Mr. Christian Aburime, has issued a vigilant call to the citizens of the state, urging them to adopt a proactive stance in anticipation of the imminent flood event as highlighted by relevant government agencies.

In a statement conveyed to journalists in Awka, Aburime emphasized the steadfast commitment of the administration of Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to the safety and well-being of the populace, particularly as the state gears up to confront the impending 2023 flood challenge.

The statement underlines the significance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of the forthcoming flood threat as a result of the annual discharge of excess water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam. The National Emergency Management Agency has reported that the authorities in Cameroon have recently issued their annual alert regarding the release of dam water.

It is anticipated that the states of Anambra, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River might bear the brunt of the dam’s discharge.

Located in Cameroon, the Lagdo Dam undertakes the annual release of surplus water during the rainy season, leading to a rise in water levels along the Benue River and its tributaries. This increase in water levels can potentially result in severe floods downstream, including within Anambra State.

The tragic episode of last year serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive capacity of these floods, as numerous communities within the state endured unparalleled devastation and losses.
