The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory polls.
Maikalangu, the incumbent chairman, secured a commanding 40,295 votes to defeat his closest rival, Moses Paul of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who polled 12,109 votes. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) trailed with 3,398 votes.
The election, held on February 21, saw over 12 political parties contesting, with a total of 62,861 valid votes recorded and 65,197 total votes cast. Rejected votes stood at 2,336, while 65,676 voters were accredited out of 837,338 registered voters.
Announcing the results, the AMAC Collation Officer, Professor Andrew Abue, said Maikalangu, having satisfied all legal requirements, was duly returned elected.
The closely watched contest drew national attention, largely due to the participation of Moses Paul, a known ally of Peter Obi. Political observers also linked Maikalangu’s victory to the influence of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
Maikalangu’s victory ensures that the APC retains control of AMAC, one of the most politically significant councils in the nation’s capital.
The outcome is expected to shape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as parties reassess their strength in the Federal Capital Territory.
