Attack: Edo NUJ forgives APC, suspends boycott of activities

The Edo State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has forgiven the All Progress Congress, APC and suspend its planned boycott of the party’s activities following a letter of ‘Unreserved apology” from the leadership of the party in Edo State and a letter of commitment to replace all the items such as cameras, laptops belonging to journalists in the State that were damaged when they were attacked on February 17, 2024 during the inconlusive APC primary elections.

Recall that some Journalists who covered the APC’s gubernatorial primaries on Saturday, 16, February, 2024 were not only malhandled but beaten black and blue by political thugs at the Lushville hotel in Benin City, venue of the Collation of the gubernatorial primary while their gadgets were also destroyed in the process.
But at a special press conference on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Edo chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, Comrade Festus Alenkhe revealed that the APC has tendered a letter of apology hence the decision to suspend the planned boycott.
The party also assured that it would replace the damaged items on or before March 16, 2024, in line with the commitment the party made to the Union.

With this development, the Chairman of the union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe advised journalists in the State to resume coverage of APC activities.

Recall that after the attack, the union called an emergency congress where a 7-day ultimatum was given to the party to apologise to the union, offset the medical bills of Journalists who sustained injuries during the attack and as well replace all the items belonging to journalists that were damaged/missing. The ultimatum expired last Sunday
