Priests of the Ayelala and Sango deities have placed a curse on unknown burglars who recently vandalized a newly built, yet-to-be-commissioned police station in Ugbineh village, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The burglars reportedly stole furniture, electrical fittings, and other valuable equipment from the facility, which had been funded through communal efforts to address local security issues.
The elders of Ugbineh village, troubled by the criminal act, called upon the priests to conduct traditional rites and lay curses on those responsible.
Witnesses reported that the priests, who also serve as healers for the community, marched around the village invoking their deities, while animals were sacrificed at key locations to reinforce the curses.
This traditional approach, they believe, will ensure the perpetrators face justice beyond the reach of conventional law enforcement.
Elder Pa. Sunday Iyoha, a community leader, expressed his dismay over the incident, stating, “We were preparing to inaugurate the police station to enhance security when criminals broke in, causing significant damage and stealing equipment.” Another elder, Omoruyi Uhunoma, explained that the elders’ decision was necessary to punish and deter future acts of vandalism and crime in the area.
Local leaders and residents now await the outcome of these traditional measures, while continuing efforts to restore and secure the vandalized station.
