Edo State Government has launched a sweeping security crackdown across major highways and forested communities following a viral video of a self-styled bandit allegedly threatening residents and claiming presence around Ekpoma and neighbouring towns.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, who was fully briefed on the development, immediately convened a high-level security meeting and ordered the intensification of surveillance and coordinated security operations across the state.
Since assuming office, the governor has placed security at the top of his agenda, activating a state-wide surveillance architecture covering critical corridors, including the Benin–Auchi Expressway, Ekpoma–Uromi Road, Ehor–Iruekpen axis, Benin Bypass, Ewu–Irrua–Ubiaja route and the Benin–Afuze–Auchi corridor.
Following his latest directive, the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilante groups and the Edo State Special Security Squad have commenced intensified search-and-comb operations across forests, boundary communities and known security flashpoints.
The government said the operations are backed by enhanced intelligence gathering, coordinated patrols and rapid response units designed to deny criminal networks any safe haven within the state.
Authorities confirmed that arrests have already been made in connection with recent security breaches, while multiple intelligence leads are currently being pursued.
In a message to residents, the Edo State Government urged citizens to remain calm, vigilant and cooperative with security agencies, warning against the spread of unverified videos and panic-inducing misinformation.
Governor Okpebholo, the government said, remains resolute in his commitment to protecting lives and property and vowed that security operations would continue until all parts of Edo State are fully secured for residents, commuters and investors.
