A young female sales representative in Benin City, Janet Bassey Michael, is crying out for justice after allegedly being assaulted by her employer during a dispute that stemmed from persistent sexual harassment and unpaid wages.
Janet, who hails from Rivers State, was reportedly brutalised by the owner of Green Spot Bar, located on Welfare Road, off Upper Sokponba, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, on 23rd July 2025. The bar, now under investigation, has become the focus of attention from security agencies after the incident went viral on social media.
According to findings, trouble began when Janet requested the payment of her June 2025 salary arrears, totalling N30,000. Her boss, whose identity remains undisclosed and is currently on the run, allegedly reacted violently to her demand. Janet claims her employer had previously made sexual advances towards her from her very first day at work, which she firmly rejected.
“I worked for my boss. The first day at work, he told me that he would love to sleep with me, but I refused. Since then, my boss developed hatred towards me. And there is nothing I do at work that makes him happy,” she said in a recorded video that has since trended online.
She further alleged that when she noticed that her colleagues had been paid and she was excluded, she approached her boss for an explanation. Instead of addressing her concern, he accused her of stealing his ATM card and withdrawing N30,000 from his account — a claim she strongly denies.
Janet recounted that the confrontation escalated when the bar owner picked up a piece of wood and viciously attacked her, inflicting a head injury that left her bleeding. He reportedly took her to a medical facility afterwards but allegedly instructed her not to report the incident and only paid part of her medical bills before abandoning her.
Outraged by the lack of justice and failure to receive her salary, Janet turned to social media to share her ordeal, drawing public attention and support.
The matter has since been taken up by a member of the Edo Civil Society Organisations, Leftist Aimuaemwonsa Igbinomwanhia, who has condemned the alleged abuse and called for the immediate arrest of the suspect.
“The guy has not been coming to the bar since the incident,” Igbinomwanhia alleged, adding that the business is now avoiding law enforcement scrutiny.
The Edo State Police Command, through Saint Saviour Division under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, has invited the fugitive bar owner for questioning. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
Human rights groups and concerned citizens are urging the authorities to ensure that justice is served and that Janet receives the full wages owed to her, along with compensation for her medical expenses and trauma.
