Suspected thieves have been caught on CCTV smashing their way into a mobile phone shop in Edo State and escaping with goods reportedly worth millions of naira, in a daring night-time raid that has unsettled residents of Ekosodin Community, near the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The burglary occurred at Wizeazy Technology, where closed-circuit television footage captured the unmasked suspects forcefully attacking the shop’s outer gate with a metallic object after business hours before gaining access to the premises. The footage suggests the operation was carefully planned, with the intruders striking when the area was quiet and businesses had closed for the day.
Residents described the incident as harrowing, saying the burglars appeared calm and deliberate as they ransacked the shop and made away with valuable items. The scale of the theft has heightened fears over security along the university axis, a bustling area that hosts students, traders and migrant workers.
In the aftermath, speculation has spread within the community, with some residents pointing accusing fingers at migrant workers, while others suspect deviant students may be behind the crime. However, these claims remain unverified, and no arrests have been announced.
As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Dependable sources, however, confirmed that a Divisional Police Officer attached to a nearby estate police station has been briefed and is aware of the burglary.
The incident has renewed calls by Ekosodin residents for increased police patrols and improved security measures around the UNIBEN corridor, amid growing concerns over a rise in property-related crimes in the area.
