Armenia’s parliament descended into chaos after ruling-party and opposition lawmakers exchanged insults and blows over a controversial proposal to establish a so-called “Ministry of Sex” aimed at addressing declining sexual satisfaction among women.

Footage of the confrontation showed lawmakers throwing punches, grabbing one another’s clothes and hurling a chair during the heated session. One legislator was also seen pouring water over an opposition lawmaker as the disagreement escalated into a physical fight.

The incident was reportedly the third parliamentary clash in a matter of days, underscoring growing tensions between the country’s political rivals.

The controversy centred on a proposal attributed to members of the opposition Strong Armenia party, which has been described in reports as pro-Russian. The proposal reportedly followed claims that a lack of sexual satisfaction was pushing women towards political activism.

The ruling Civil Contract party rejected the idea, which was presented as an initiative to ensure there would be “no unsatisfied women”.

The dispute intensified when Civil Contract lawmaker Taron Chakhoyan took to the podium and demanded an apology over the controversial remarks.

Chakhoyan also accused opposition figures of corruption and criticised the alleged involvement of members of Narek Karapetyan’s extended family in politics.

“Mr Karapetyan, it is not my fault that your entire extended family is involved in politics, including your uncle, your father, and your cousin, who even tried to open a ministry in our country,” Chakhoyan said.

He added: “It is not my fault that he wanted to open a ministry that would satisfy all women. You have still not apologised to women for that.”

Karapetyan reportedly fired back, describing Chakhoyan as a “mess from head to toe”.

The verbal exchange quickly spiralled out of control as lawmakers rushed towards the podium, triggering a physical confrontation inside the parliamentary chamber.

One participant was seen removing his jacket and placing it over a wooden barrier before joining the fray.

According to The Telegraph, Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Vahagn Aleksanyan threw a red leather chair during the altercation, while Chakhoyan poured water over opposition lawmaker Garnik Davtyan.

The extraordinary scenes have drawn attention to the deepening hostility between Armenia’s ruling party and opposition lawmakers, with the proposed ministry becoming the flashpoint for the latest parliamentary showdown.
